If you’ve stumbled across this somehow, you probably need to stop scrolling, open the window, and take a deep breath. I’m Mark, I’m rapidly approaching my 60s, and I’m retired. I have never been the best at anything I have ever done. They say everyone is good at something, but in the words of U2, “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.” Even my cancer was stage 2 (5 years clear, whoop whoop). Having said that, I’ve also not been the worst. In fact, with most things I’ve tried my hand at, I’ve been decidedly average, even above average. A Jack of all trades and master of none type of person. The same goes for my holiday adventures, which I started having when I retired and which this will be about from 2025 onwards.
I started writing a diary about them, which I shared on social media, and then created a website because I loathe Facebook. I like writing, but I’ve found that I get more enjoyment out of it if I ‘publish it,’ even if nobody else sees it. Just the million-to-one chance that somebody might read it and have a chuckle makes it worth doing.
Anyway, my old blog is still active, and I was deciding if I was going to port it over to this; but as I was typing these very words, I thought, ‘fuck that’. I’m actually proud of it, so if you are interested, you can find it here: Average Holidays
I used the ‘AI Tool’ to come up with this title. It’s far more upbeat than mine, so don’t be fooled. Lisbon in a couple of weeks.
